OUTED: The Painful RealityStarts: 2016-12-10
Outed is an unflinching drama depicting the violence directed towards LGBT people in Uganda, a country known for its homophobic laws. Shot by the filmmaker in secret to avoid reprisal, the film is based on a true story of what happened after a Ugandan newspaper printed an article outing the "top 200 homosexuals" in the country. This film is being shown in partnership with dailyxtra.com as a "Satellite Screening" of the Kampala Queer Film Festival, which takes place in Kampala, Uganda from Dec. 10-12, 2016. Director and primary organizer of the Kampala Queer Film Festival, Kamoga Hassan, will be in attendance to take questions after the film via Skype. Turkish Star WarsStarts: 2016-11-04
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there was a country called Turkey and in this wonderful land, the concept of copyright infringement was something very much open to interpretation. Case in point, TURKISH STAR WARS! This movie is absolutely jaw-dropping insane! Between flat-out stealing footage from the original STAR WARS and music from the RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK soundtrack, there's a plot somewhere in there about two space cadets crash-landing on a desert planet, where an evil wizard seeks the ultimate power to take over the world. The temptation to see ROGUE ONE may be strong, but do make it a point to come out and see TURKISH STAR WARS: THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE STRIKES BACK on the BIG SCREEN courtesy of yours friends at the Carlton Midnight Society
Ladies and Gents, The Fabulous StainsStarts: 2016-12-07
Ladies and gentlemen, The MUFF Society is back this December with our friends Musicale to present Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains at Carlton Cinemas! Starring a 16-year-old Diane Lane as Corinne Burns (or as she’d rather be called, ‘Third Degree’ Burns), a bored and frustrated teenager who is fed up with her small town and all the bullshit it entails. Burns becomes bewitched at a local punk show and thrusts herself into the scene: she ditches her sandy-blonde locks for a black and blonde skunk-y hairdo, then forms the angry and unapologetic punk group, The Stains, with a couple of the baddest bitches she knows—her sister and cousin. Join us in the lobby at 8:00 PM for photobooth fun, a rad punk playlist, and a vendor pop-up of Toronto women artisans curated by our friends at Heart On. As always, we will have some amazing prizes to give away before the screening, so don’t be late! Bonus points if you come in costume!
